Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know

Find answers to common questions about the eazyEPC platform, the digitization of the industry, and how to get started as a professional.

General &
Industry Digitization

What is the digitization of the EPC industry?

The Department of Electricity & Energy identified the need for digitization of the EPC industry in 2023 after the switch from SANAS accreditation to SANEDI Registered Professionals and the introduction of Quality Assurers. The intent is to standardize calculations through pre-programmed software which eliminates human error and ensures consistency.

Are buildings still going to be registered on the NBEPR?

Yes. SANEDI is responsible for maintaining a National Building Energy Performance Register (NBEPR). Building owners must continue to register their buildings on the NBEPR.

How do I become a Registered Professional?

Refer to the SANEDI website, which outlines the requirements and process to become a Registered Professional: https://epc.sanedi.org.za and the SANEDI Eligibility Criteria.

In the public sector, whose details can be used by the building owner?

For public sector buildings, the Accounting Officer's contact details can be used as the contact details for the Building Owner.

What are the lead times on QA?

The QA has 2 days to accept or reject the assignment before it is automatically re-assigned to another QA.

What is the turnaround time on QA applications?

Feedback on QA applications is 10 business days.

Registration &
Account Management

Do I have to register an admin account even if I am an individual?

Yes. An administrator is the primary contact person that manages the eazyEPC account, uploads documents, and facilitates payment. The administrator can also add or remove users.

What if I am the only Registered Professional or QA in my organization?

You register yourself as the administrator. After your admin account is active, you can add yourself as a Registered Professional or QA (or both).

Training
& Upskilling

What are the accredited institutions for EPC training?

IEPA – Institute of Energy Professionals Africa: https://www.iepa.org.za/
GBCSA – Green Building Council of South Africa: https://www.gbcsa.org.za/

Who is required to attend training and how do they attend?

All users are required to attend training to use eazyEPC effectively. We offer regular online training for Registered Professionals and QAs, as well as ad-hoc in-person training at specific locations.

How much does training cost?

Training is free of charge for all Registered Professionals and QAs on all platforms.

Technical &
Data Integration

How does eazyEPC normalize for unoccupied floor area?

According to SANS 1544, the unoccupied floor area shall be prorated to the measurement period. The calculation is time-based, representing the proportion of time that a building or part of a building is occupied within a year.

On eazyEPC, the user inputs the total number of weeks that an area is unoccupied under the field “Unoccupied Duration”. The usable net floor area is then prorated using the percentage which eazyEPC calculates based on the number of unoccupied weeks entered.

How do I add an excluded area if I did not take measurements?

The measurements from a floor plan can be used, provided the scale is verified during the site inspection.

How do I link an excluded area if it is not part of the other floor area IDs?

The user must account for the area to be excluded in the “Total Floor Area” form under the “Floor Area” tab. The total floor area can be used as the reference ID when specifying the exclusion. For example, if there is a basement area, include it in the total floor area.

Which standards does eazyEPC conform to?

eazyEPC calculates building ratings using South African National Standards, specifically SANS 1544 for Energy Performance Certificates and SANS 10400-XA for Energy Usage in Buildings.

What factors are used in eazyEPC for converting other energy sources to kWh?

The factors follow Association of Energy Engineers conversion tables, consistent with SANS 1544 training from accredited bodies such as GBCSA and IEPA. This is also supplemented by South African National Standards SANS 342 for liquid fuel. Liquid fuel sold in South Africa must conform to SANS 342.
